This apprenticeship will train you to install, configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot electrical connected digital home technologies, delivering simple, secure, reliable, and sustainable user experiences.

What experience and skills will you gain?

During this apprenticeship, you will develop a comprehensive skillset to become a proficient Smart Home Technician, including:

  • Technical Documentation: Reading and interpreting technical drawings, product specifications, wiring schedules, and schematics.
  • Architectural Documentation: Understanding plans, elevations, cross-sectional drawings, and Mechanical & Electrical drawings.
  • Project Management: Working with project plans, works orders, change notes, purchase orders, and performance specifications.
  • Health and Safety: Implementing construction and electrical health and safety procedures, including Safe Isolation & Accessory Replacement.
  • Electrical Principles: Applying basic electrical theory (Ohm's law, power law, etc.) and understanding signal types and modulation methods.
  • Data/IP Networking: Configuring network devices (routers, switches, access points), securing networks, and ensuring data protection.
  • Automation and Control: Installing and testing control hardware (keypads, handsets, apps) and building control systems (lighting, HVAC).
  • Access Control and Security Systems: Installing, configuring, and testing access control hardware (CCTV, intercoms, keypads, locks).
  • Digital Entertainment Systems: Installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and calibrating audio, video, and home entertainment systems.
  • Digital Broadcast Reception Systems: Installing and testing terrestrial & satellite TV and radio receivers.
  • Equipment Placement and Mounting: Utilizing construction types, fixing methods, cable running techniques, racks, and mounting hardware.
  • Digital Communication Systems: Installing, configuring, and testing communication devices (telephones, smartphones, tablets).
  • Environmental and Energy Systems: Installing equipment ventilation, battery backup systems, and interfacing with HVAC and energy management systems.

  • What do you need to apply?

    You will be expected to have at least 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including English, Maths and Science, and Maths at Grade 4 or above (or their equivalent).

    If you do not hold GCSE English or maths you may be able to take this along side the programe subject to a an initial assessment.

  • How will you be assessed?

    There will be a combination of multiple choice and written exams, portfolio work, interviews and practical assessments.

    Upon successful completion of this apprenticeship, you will be a qualified Smart Home Technician, ready to pursue a rewarding career in the growing smart home industry. Potential career paths include:

    • Smart Home Installation Technician.
