Students from South Bank Colleges recently returned from an unforgettable 23-day work experience abroad, where they had the chance to live, learn, and work in Germany, Portugal, and Cyprus. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity gave learners from Engineering, Science, Travel and Tourism, and Business the chance to take on real roles within their chosen industries.
.
Engineering and Science students worked in workshops and laboratories, applying their skills in hands-on settings, while Business students were placed in retail and marketing roles. Travel and Tourism students gained insight into the hospitality sector, with placements in hotels, front desk roles, and kitchen teams.
But the trip was about more than work experience alone. Students explored their host countries through guided tours, cultural excursions, boat trips, and group dinners. These activities offered the chance to bond as a team, connect with peers, and immerse themselves in new cultures.
Following their return, feedback sessions revealed just how impactful the experience had been. Students spoke about how much they had grown both personally and professionally. Many highlighted that having international work experience under their belts before even completing college made them feel more confident and competitive for future opportunities. They returned home with new friendships, greater independence, and a fresh perspective on their future careers.
Each country offered its own unique experience:
Cyprus
Students stayed at an all-inclusive hotel near the beach, complete with a stunning pool, creating a holiday-style setting where they could relax after work and make the most of their surroundings.
Germany
Placed in the heart of Berlin, students were able to experience the vibrancy of city life while taking part in work placements that exposed them to the fast pace and diversity of local industries.
Portugal
In Faro, students stayed in apartments, giving them the opportunity to build life skills such as budgeting, cooking, and managing their own living space, all while gaining valuable work experience.
Throughout the trip, students developed key life and employability skills that will stay with them as they move into adulthood and the world of work. This international work experience was not only a stepping stone into their future careers but also a memorable chapter of personal growth, teamwork, and cultural discovery.
